The cooking utensils and provi-sions were brought from the boat; seatsand benches Avere easily found on theroots of the great oaks which stood outabove the white sand to almost as greata circumference as that of the branches;plates and cups were laid out; in a wood-en tray corn meal was hastily mixed withwater and salt, fashioned into five pones,and fitted into the skillet; setting thisupon a bed of glowing embers and cover-ing its iron lid with more live coals, thekettle was next set on to boil, the baconsliced,the frying-pan made hot. The Majorrolled in meal a fish freshly caught andcleaned by Mr. Wegg, and the fish wasfried immediately upon the removal ofthe meat from its own lard. To makethe coffee completed the task, and thatgypsy breakfast, with the help of sugarand condensed milk, and some crackersfrom the square tin can, was to our tastea delicious one. ON THE KISSIMMEE. to the boat, for on finding no way to getat game from this point, Mr. Wegg de-clared that tliis was only the north beachof Gardiners Island, while the southbeach was the real hunting ground. Sowe skirted tlie beach, but found no south-ward opening—only grasses and lily leavesas on the margin of a lake. Still we sail-ed on,westward from the beach, and sailedfor hours, a great lake opening before us,and finally Mr. Wegg remarked that hedidnt believe we were in Kissimmee Lakeafter all; we must be in the lake the Indi-ans called Hatchinineha. But the gamewas a great deal more plentiful on Hatch-ininelia than on Gardiners Island. Make a landing, then, anywhere, andlet us get up the tents and have a nightsrest, was the general cry. But, alas! tliiswas impossible.
