Easthampton has furnished to Mr. Smilliemany interesting subjects, which have beenshown at the exhibitions. His city studio con-tains interesting souvenirs of old gardens andpoultry-yards. Mr. Smillie, who is also identifiedwith Marblehead, paints trees and rocks as themasters gejwe paint aged men and women,making every wrinkle and scar tell its story. which Easthampton offers to the painter oflandscape alone. She is still more capriciousin the aspects which she shows her differentsuitors. Mr. Smillie finds here a likeness bothto England and Holland. The gardens andorchards, the lanes, barns, and shrubbery, areall English; while the meadows stretching tolow horizons, the windmills with their deli-cate white vans outlined against the sky,are Dutch. Mr. Jones, on the other hand, isstruck by the resemblance of the locality toBrittany. Mr. Bruce Crane, too, is carriedstraight to Pont Aven by the hay-ricks andpoultry-yards, and by the soft gray atmos- THE SUMMER HAUNTS OE AMERICAN ARTISTS.

Mr. Dielmans sketching umbrellahas tented frequently in this attractive spot. The more fashionable beaches in the vi-cinity of New York have fewer artist visitors,though Mr. Muhrman loves to paint at ConeyIsland, and Mr. F. S. Church finds the marshlands for his kings flamingoes near LongBranch and elsewhere in New Jersey, Hough-ton Farm, with its thousand acres of woodlandand meadow, claims him as a guest, and it isin such solitudes that his humorous fanciesand grotesques have found expression. Frank Fowler and his artist wife usuallypass the months of June and September in aquaint old house at Bridgeport, Conn.
