animals found in this region—buffalo, elk,deer and mountain sheep. Mud Geysers are about five miles from the LakeHotel, and consist of several large craters filled withblue, pasty mud, one and all emitting odors far fromagreeable. The attractive feature of this locality is the »8 yi:i.i.owstone: nationai, park. Mud Volcano, situated a few rods to the west of theroad, at the base of the chfT, whose funnel-shaped craterIS thirty feet in depth, formed by mud ejected from be-low through a cave-like opening, out of which a sick-ening, lead-colored mass of mud, of the consistency ofsoft mortar, is constantly belched, accompanied by dull,muffled sounds, and in manner at once repulsive andfascinating. Durmg the summer of 1898 visitors witnessed themost violent eruptions of the Mud Volcano ever re-corded. The mud-plastered trees in the vicinity arestill in evidence of these terrific explosions. HAYDEN VALLEY. TOUR O^ THK PARK. 89 to Mary Mountain. It is the largest valley in the res-ervation, and especially adapted as a range for game,being well watered by Trout and Alum Creeks, and pro-tected on the north and west by a heavily timberedrange. Sulphur Mountain consists of a group of isolatedhills or buttes each about 150 feet high, of which asplendid view is obtained from the roadway that skirtsalong their western base. Large blocks of detachedrock are scattered about, in all of which a great per-centage of pure sulphur is noticeable. The fumes aris-ing from the various vents are exceedingly disagree-able. The chief attraction is a large boiling spring atthe base of the mountain on the west side. Of this Capt.G. C. Doane, of the U. S. A., has given the followinggraphic description : The greatest spring in appearancelies at the base of the highest hill, and is intensely sul-phurous, great clouds of vapor continually escapmg fromit.
