Summary edit

Description
English: Highgate, view looking towards Wednesday Market, Beverley circa 1900s.

Highgate is one of Beverley’s most famous streets, leading to the historic Minster, with its traditional granite-set road leading from Wednesday Market.
Situated on the west side of Highgate, nos. 6-8, is a timber framed house dating from the fifteenth century, (then divided into two) its jettied appearance, with overhanging first floor, was very similar to the medieval buildings still standing in York’s Shambles today. However, carved tracery window details around the first floor window and a moulded and carved cornice separating the floors were unique to Beverley. The building had been slightly altered, with the addition of a late Victorian first floor shop window and a moulded and carved cornice separating the floors.
Sadly, the property was demolished in 1956. Highgate, however, remains one of Beverley’s oldest and most attractive streets leading up to the north door of the Minster.
