face of the chancel arch. The Normanmasons had, as was discovered when this arch was rebuiltin 1845, inserted these stones with their faces turned inwardsinto the jambs. They had probably found them on thewestern side of the Saxon arch, facing the congregation. Thecarved subjects are—the Crucifixion (now the centre of thethree), Christ enthroned (on the north), and St. Peter, repre-ented according to the Saxon idea as a beardless youth (onthe south). Higher up the valley lie the two Duntesbournes, Duntes-bourne Rous and Duntcsbourne Abbots. The hill on whichit is built has a steep decline from west to east, and there istherefore room for a crypt under the chancel, lighted by a smalldeeply splayed window. The chancel wall above was blankafter the local peculiarity more than once noticed, but a smallmodern window has been inserted.^ There is a very curiouslow saddleback tower at the west end,^ and the interiorcontains some good old oak pews, and a fine Jacobean pulpit.Altogether it is one of the most unmutilated churches of its sizein the county. The manor was, with that of Temple Guiting, bestowed by Bishop Foxe upon Corpus, and here the collegeare also the patrons of the living : it would be pleasant to thinkthat the immunity of the church was in some degree due tothis circumstance, but I fear that the inference would not bewarranted by a general review of college livings. We will notleave the Duntesbournes without noticing a feat
