He wasone of the firstto buildhorse railwaysin San Fran-cisco, onwhich werecharged lowfares. His rulewas, whetherk e e p i ng aHotel, con-ducting aplace ofamusement,or running ahorse railway,to put theprice of ad-mission andfare so low that all might use and enjoy their advantages. Later in life, he purchased a farm of 2.000 acres in the Napa val-ley, for a home, surrounding it with fruits, fiowers and ornumentaltrees, such as taste and experience prompted him to select. At tliisplace he died in the fall of 1879, young, comparatively, in years, butold enough to have been of great service to San Francisco, havingdone more to entertain the people than any man in the State.

California, was early occupied by Francisco Palouand Benito Cambon, two Franciscan Catholic monks from Spain, whofounded here the mistfion of San Francisco de Asie. October 9, 1776.The mission prospered, and. in 1825. it possessed 76.000 head ofcattle. 79,000 sheep. 3.000 horses, 18,000 bushels of wheat andbarley, $35,000 worth of merchandise, and $25,000 in cash; havingat the same time supervision over 1,800 Indians. In 1834 the missions of California were placed under the controlof civil officers, and in a few years nothing remained of their formerpower, but a few buildings. The first bouse of modern constructionin San Francisco was erected in 1835, near the present site of the City Hall. The first survey of streets and lots wiis made in 1839.The town was known as Yerba Buena until January 30, 1847. whenthe village council changed it to San Francisco.
