s the people thronged his humble dwelling,and rich and )>oor, who hud learned to love the gt-niul i)OLt, in a mul-titude attended hin funeral. Seventeen years afterwards, a monu-ment was erected to his memory at Dumfries, and at the centenaryof his birth-day, in 1859, the people in many parts of the civilizedworld paid tribute to his genial nature and his talent. Burns left four sons, one of whom, William, a colonel in theservice, purchased the house where hif* father died, and there his mother lived until her death, in 1834. By the provisions of Williams will, the house and garden were left for the use of the DumfriesEducation Society, upon a payment of an annuity to certain relativesof the poet during their life-time, with the further jirovi^ion that thehouse should thereafter be kept in repair. The poetry of Burns, full of passion, pathos, wit. and lldttity tonature, appeals directly to the heart, and will ever hold a prominentplace among the sweet songs of the English language.
