La Bourgogne fit, au nord de Lyon, ceque fit le Dauphiné au sud; elle contint etramena les départements des anciennes pro-vinces de Franche-Comté et de Bresse. Les dangers de la république et de laFrance restaient encore immenses. La Fran-ce était entourée dun cercle do fer et defeu. Lyon, armé, fortifié, dominant tout cequi forme aujourdhui les deux départe-ments du llhùne et de la Loire, paralysaiten quelque sorte larmée des Alpes. Cettearmée ne se trouva plus en état de fermerles débouchés des montagnes aux forcesaustro-piémontaises, qui pénétrèrent en Sa-voie. Aux Pyrénées, les Espagnols avaient T. IV. pris par famine le fort de Bellegarde; laplaine du Koussillon leur était ouverte, etils menaçaient Perpignan. Les flottes es-pagnole et anglaise bloquaient la côte deProvence. La guerre continuait dans la Vendée,sans quon en pût prévoir lissue.
