Text Appearing Before Image:
urambassador. I called upon him at his resi-dence early this morning, a plain, squarebrick house with a hall running through thecentre. He personally answered my ring, andI made an appointment to meet him again inthe afternoon. But we stood on the porchand talked some time. He is seventy-oneyears of age, a rather large gentleman, ablonde, with mild, blue eye and kindly face—an elegant, easy talker, scattering unpremed-itated poetical similes through his speech. To illustrate, I had passed some complimentsupon the beauty of the country around, whereupon he replied: 1 Mr. Howe : if you can sketch for yourbooh the hills which girdle this village and thefields of green and primeval forests, all seenunder your eye from my door, you ivill havea picture of quiet beauty scarcely surpassedanywhere, certainly not in any part of thisgreat country of ours, so far as I have seen, and 1 have seen much the greater part, nor inthat foreign land, Japan, the Land of theMorning, famed for its landscapes.
Text Appearing After Image:
HARRISON COUNTY. 173 Thinking that this speech of beauty aboutCadiz from this eminent man should be pre-served for the gratification of its people afterhe had passed away, I wrote it from memoryand presented it for his inspection on mysecond call, when he went on to thus com-ment : The Japanese had called Japan the4 Land of the Rising Sun, but the expression Land of the Morning I believe is originalwith me. We cannot tell from whencethoughts come. They drop from the brainlike rain from heaven. I used the expressionin a speech I made at Yokohama in the fallof 1873, which was reported by an Englishgentleman, Mr. Dixon, and printed both inJapanese and English. Five years later Mr.Dixon published a work upon Japan andentitled*it 4 The Land of the Morning. Theexpression pleased the Japanese, and now itstands for all time. He thought he could improve his littlespeech to me, and at my request, after somereflection, thus wrote in my note-book : Dear Mr. Howe : 44 The hills and primeval forest
