mind, Mr. Maher has developed a style which is distinctively hisown, and so original that it may almost be claimed to be indigenousto the United States. He has introduced a new theory of design intoall his work, which he calls the motif rhythm. This theory takes itsinspiration from surrounding life and environment, at the same timefollowing closely ethical laws which govern good architectural design.Thus, in James A. Pattens house at Evanston the thistle is combinedwith certain pronounced geometrical figures, forming the motif of thedesign. Throughout the exterior and interior of Harry Rubensunique country residence at Glencoe the motif flower is the holly-hock, combined with certain structural thernes, while the Americanhoneysuckle, with strong horizontal lines, furnishes Mr. Maherwith his Mower and rhythm motif in the construction and embellish-ment of John Parsons beautiful and original place at Oak Park. Hissuggestive and original style is also aptly illustrated by the residences
