Pennsyl-vania, for whom he opened the first analytical laboratory to be estab-lished in connection with iron or steel works in America. Whilethus employed he joined the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, serv-ing in the Civil war as private, sergeant, captain (in command ofCamp Curtin (Harrisburg), and mustering officer for the state ofPennsylvania. After the war Mr. Hunt was appointed superintendent of theexperimental Bessemer steel works at Wyandotte, Michigan, whichwas controlled by a number of iron companies (of which the Cambriawas one), and in this capacity had charge of the first Bessemer steelplant operated in America. In May, 1866, he returned to the homeworks to become superintendent of the steel business of the CambriaIron Company, at Johnstown, continuing thus for several years. In1871 he assisted George Fritz, chief engineer of the company, indesigning and erecting their Bessemer plant, of which, on its com-pletion, he assumed charge, remaining in the employ of the Cambria
