er-ing the entrance of tomb is beautifully carved the family coatof arms. Thomas Lewis purchased the tomb and the name ofLewis is engraved on this slab. Another notable stone is that commemorating the patriot,Capt. Daniel Malcom. It is of hard blue slate, well preserved,and bears the following inscription: Here lies buried in aStone Grave 10 feet deepCAPT. DANIEL MALCOM MERCHT.who departed this lifeOctober 23d1769Aged 44 years,a true son of Libertya Friend to the Publickan Enemy to oppressionand one of the foremo/tin opposing the Revenue Actson America. The above is referred to in O. W. Holmes GrandmothersStory of Bunker Hill. You may bang the dirt and welcome, theyre as safe asDanl MalcolmTen foot beneath the gravestone that youvesplintered with your balls. The stone grave, however, is built of brick. Malcom was a merchant, and his store on Fleet street was afavorite resort of the haters of the revenue acts. He was alsoa warden of Christ Church and vice-president of the Charitable 12

In February, 1768, aided by friends armed withclubs, he smuggled in at night a cargo of sixty casks of winefrom a vessel anchored five miles down the harbor. A littlelater he presided over a meeting of business men, at which itwas resolved to import no more English goods, except thoseneeded for the fisheries, for a year and a half. Some monthsafterward he was one of the leaders in the mob which resistedthe seizure of John Hancocks sloop Liberty by the boats ofthe British frigate Romney. He was decidedly obnoxiousto the Kings officers, and six years after his death the Britishsoldiers made his tombstone a particular target, the bulletmarks being very conspicuous. In the northwestern part of the ground is the stone of CaptThomas Lake, bearing the following inscription: Capt. Thomas Lake Aged 61 Yeeres An EmineNet Faithfvll ServaN of God & One Of a Publick Spirit Was Perfidovsly Slain Byye Indians At Kennibeck Avgvst ye 14th 1676
