study medicine. He graduated finallyfrom the Cleveland Medical College, and for twenty-nine yearspractised his profession at Fallston, where he died. James Patterson Johnston was born at Hookstown, Pa., June2, 1858. His professional life was outside of this county, butafter his death he was buried in Mill Creek cemetery, near hisbirthplace. Prestley M. Kerr was born in Raccoon township, BeaverCounty, in 1835. He studied medicine with Dr. J. RamseyMiller, and graduated from the Allopathic Medical College atCincinnati, Ohio, in 1869. He began his practice near the homeof his childhood, where he remained until his death in 1884. Hewas a successful army surgeon, a fine general practitioner, andhighly esteemed by all who knew him. He left two sons in theprofession, Drs. Alvin H. and J. P. Kerr. George W. Langfitt was born in this county, July 3, 1844.He practised medicine for several years at New Scottsville, andin 1871 he removed to Bellevue, Allegheny County, where hedied in June, 1890.

Associate Judge of the County of Beaver. History of Beaver County 379 Milton Lawrence was the oldest son of Samuel Lawrence ofBeaver, the second prothonotary of the county. He was bornin November, 1801, studied medicine with Dr. Milo Adams, andsettled in Hookstown in 1826, remaining there until 1839. Hewas elected prothonotary of Beaver County in the fall of 1839,and was re-elected in 1842 and 1845, holding the office until1848,—three consecutive terms. In 1849 he returned to Hooks-town and resumed the practice of medicine. On March 11,1862, he was commissioned by Governor Curtin to fill the va-cancy caused by the death of Hon. John Scott, one of the asso-ciate judges of the county, and was elected his own successor inOctober of the same year. He was elected again in 1867, andagain in 1872, serving continuously for fifteen years and eightmonths, when the office was set aside by the provisions of theConstitution of 1874.
