On the paternal side his ancestry wasScotch-Irish, his great-grandfather having come toAmerica and settled at Greenville, Ohio, about 1840.after a residence of some years in Pennsylvania.The material ancestors were of Irish stock and earlyPennsylvania settlers. Robert W. Briggs, the father,was born at Greenville, Darke county, Ohio, latermoved to northern Indiana, where he acquired sub-stance as a farmer, and now lives retired in NorthLiberty.
