tfkn/J^fcaZ 499 EDWARD SWIFT ISHAM. Edward Swift Isham, the senior member of the law firm of Isham, Lincoln& Beale, was born at Bennington, Vt., January 15, 1836. His parents werePierrepont Isham, one of Vermonts most distinguished jurists and, for a con-siderable period, a member of its Supreme Court, and Semanthe (Swift) Isham.In his early youth he spent several years in South Carolina, but he preparedfor college at the Lawrence Academy, in Groton, Mass., and subsequentlyentered Williams College in 1853, from which he received his degree in 1857.During his collegiate course he was a member of Chi Psi Society and, after-wards, of the Phi Beta Kappa, and later he received from his Alma Mater thedegrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Laws. After a period in the lawschool at Harvard and continued study in his fathers office, he was admittedto the bar in Rutland, Vt., in 1858, and in October of the same year he came toChicago, where in the next year he entered into a partnership wit
