He was given unusual advantages for that day, and after complet-ing his career in the common schools he entered Hamilton College of that Stateand after four years of hard study was graduated with distinction. In early lifehe was adventurous and managed to see life in many phases. While yet a boyhe served as an operative in a wool-carding factory, and when only fifteen yearsold he took the usual examination for school teaching and successfully passedand began a short career as a pedagogue. Despite his age he managed tocontrol the large boys and was successful. In 1821, when but fourteen years ofage, he enlisted as a midshipman in the United States Navy, but was rejectedupon examination because his stature was not up to the requirements of thatbranch of the service. He continued to teach for several years, and during thevacations engaged in various other pursuits to swell his income. He mountedone of the old-time stages and for a season cracked his whip along one of the 320

Having made up hismind to study and practice law, he devoted himself to his books, beginning in1826 and continuing with some interregnums for several years. He continuedthe study after his removal to Pennsylvania, in 1828, under the direction of aMr. Ruger, and late in that year was admitted to the bar of that State. Hebegan to practice law, and from the start was successful. He possessed manyof the qualities absolutely necessary for the successful practice of that difficultprofession. Soon his power at the bar brought him fame as well as affluence.His strength as a public speaker and his splendid social qualities brought himprominently before his fellow-citizens for political preferment, and accordinglyhe was elected to the Constitutional Convention called to frame a new organiclaw for the State late in the decade of the thirties.
