Toprovide for the defence of Saltillo was an important duty;a field-work had been erected, upon which was mountedtwo howitzers; the General also detached two companiesof riflemen and a field-piece for the protection of the place.At sunrise on the morning of the 23d, Santa Anna or-dered General Pacheco, with a division of three thousandinfantry and four guns of heavy calibre, to take the posi-tion occupied by the Americans, in front. The cavalrywas at the same time brought up to support the move-ment.
