of dates and the names of those who befriendedme on my way to the Union lines, must be accounted for from the factthat I kept no names in full in my diary, as I was liable to be recapturedat any time; and in that event the friends of the Union would havebeen confronted with the evidence and been most unmercifully dealtwith, if they escaped death, such was the hatred of the rebels towardthose who befriended an escaped prisoner. I have endeavored, as faras my memory serves me, and from what I could glean from noteskept in my diary, to give a pen picture of my prison life, which is notoverdrawn, knowing that it will not do to portray all the horrors ofthe prison lest it should destroy credit for the whole story.
