er teaching four years he studied medicine, graduatingfrom Starling Medical College, Columbus, Ohio, and then com-menced the practice of medicine at Waverly. In September, 1861, he commenced recruiting a company, andin October following went into Camp Diamond, at Jackson, Ohio,with Co. A, 53rd Regiment O. V. I., this being the first full com-pany recruited in Pike county to help put down the Rebellion. In the latter part of the winter of 1862 General Sherman wasorganizing a force at Paducah, Ky., to ascend the Tennessee Riverand move upon Corinth, Miss. The 53rd Regiment joined Sherman at Paducah in February,1862, and became a part of his division. They remained at Padu-cah until March. During this month they ascended the Ten-nessee River, disembarking at Pittsburg Landing. Near this placethe battle of Shiloh was fought April 6th and 7th. This wasGeneral Jones first battle, and for gallant conduct he was pro-moted to the Colonelcy of his regiment, and immediately assumedcommand of it.
