neral Order No. 15 made him Major-General, and his command was called the Department of thePotomac. The First New Jersey Brigade was continued in Gen-eral AAilliam B. Franklins division, which was composed of theFirst New Jersev Brigade. General Kearny, General Slocumsbrigade and General Newtons brigade of infantry. Batteries Dand G, the Second U. S. Artillery, Hexamers battery, and theFirst New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, Colonel McReynolds. The first actual contact the Brigade had with the rebels was onAugust 31st. Colonel Taylor, of the Third New Jersey Volun-teers, determined to stop the annoyance caused by the rebelpickets and sharpshooters. He took forty men, who volunteeredfor the sen-ice, from two companies of his regiment, and pro-ceeded along the Little River turnpike under cover of the woodsuntil he arrived at a point where he could strike the road in therear of the rebel pickets, and cut them off. He was obliged topass through a small cornfield, and while there was fired upon.
