d realized weakness threw him, moreover, with a ful-ness he might not otherwise have felt, on the supportingprovidence of God. He alone could be his fortress/* his high crag, his strength, his ^ deliverer, his rock in which he found refuge and trusted, his^shield/ the *^horn of his salvation, and his hightower. * The wilderness of Judah, tradition informs us,heard his pathetic cry: 0 God, thou art my God;early ^ will I seek Thee: my soul thirsteth for Thee, myflesh longeth for Thee, in a dry and thirsty land, whereno water is. ^ It was there he sangâ Because Thy loving-kindness is better than life,My lips shall praise Thee. . . . Because thou hast been my help, Therefore in the shadow of Thy wings will I rejoice. * 1 Sam. xxvi. 20. For the words, come out to seek a flea, read come out to seek my life. Sept. 2 1 Sam. xxiv. 23, for where his haunt is,* read where hiapassing foot is. Ewald. Thenius. 3 1 Sam. XX. 3. â * Ps. xviii. 2. * Or, earnestly. * Ps. Ixiii. 1. DAVID AN OUTLAW. 169
Text Appearing After Image:
EXGEDT, F^OM UNPER JeBKL FhfKIF. From a water colour by W. C. P. Medlj/cott. 170 DAVID AN OUTLAW. My soul followeth hard after Thee,Thy right hand has upheld me. But those who seek my life, Let them go into the lower parts of the earth. * Let them be given over to the sword! Let them be a portion for jackals! ^ The 54th Psalm, also ascribed to this period, expressesthe same trust in God amidst the utmost peril. It wasa hard school, but it made David all that he afterwardsbecame. To escape a fresh pursuit from Saul in the same region,he seems now to have led his men into the dreary solitudeknown as Jeshimon, or The Waste, on the east of Ziphâa district of white peaks and cones of chalk, and deepnarrow wadys, stretching away to the great pointed cliffof Ziz, above Engedi, with its line of precipices 2,000feet bigh, over the Dead Sea.^ Unhabited and unin-habitable for about 60 miles north and south, from theoasis of Jericho to the Wady Fikrahâwith an averagebreadth of about 15 milesâ
