On Sundays and holidays the Cathedral is crowdedfor High Mass, which is celebrated with great pomp.Men take their places to the right, women to theleft; girls—farmers daughters, servants, etc., incostume—stand or kneel everywhere in the aisles.The reason for this last arrangement is that theywear so many skirts—fifteen to twenty-one is aSunday allowance—that they could not possiblyget in between the seats, and could not sit downif they did. We were at one time allowed the useof a chamber resembling a private box, with curvedglass windows towards the church, which was highup on one side of the chancel, whence we couldfollow the elaborate services, or retire withoutattracting attention when a sermon which wecould not understand was to be preached. On fine days, when the congregation leaves theCathedral, it forms a brilliant spectacle. The oldpeople seem to melt away unnoticed, or serve butas a foil for the young. KALOCSA: A MAGYAR CATHEDRAL TOWN US dress in black, though their short velvet jacketshave sometimes a discreetly worked border ofcrimson flowers and green leaves, and they alwayswear top-boots. Active, compact-looking fellows,and clean-shaven all but their moustaches, there issomething about them suggestive of the circus.But they, again, serve but as a foil for the maids—the gaily-dressed, the finely-moving maids—whoin colour can outvie golden and silver pheasantsstrutting in the sun. Hard by the Cathedral stand the iron gates,surmounted by a Cardinals hat in the same metal,whence the drive, passing through a garden ofroses, leads up to the great doors of the palace ofthe Archbishop. The palace, built about the same date as theCathedral, is a large pleasant-looking, light-colouredbuilding, with two retiring wings. Along its frontrun two rows of windows, sixteen in each, and ithas a large grey roof. Inside are a chapel, innumer-able reception-rooms and guest-chambers, a dining-hall
