The Slovaks, who occupyalmost entirely the Carpathian mountains, formeda great empire under Svotoplok at the time ofthe Magyar conquest, and, like the rest of the na-tionalities who nowform the Hungarian kingdom,they have been subjugated to Hungarian laws,being, however, allowed to preserve their lan-guage, which they have done up to the presentday.
