The Slovaks, who occupyalmost entirely the Carpathian mountains, formeda great empire under Svotoplok at the time ofthe Magyar conquest, and, like the rest of the na-tionalities who nowform the Hungarian kingdom,they have been subjugated to Hungarian laws,being, however, allowed to preserve their lan-guage, which they have done up to the presentday. They are a kindred race of the Slavs, whoare to be met with in the various parts of thecountry, and principally in Slavonia and Croatia.The Slav language is subdivided into many dia-lects, and the people in different districts varyconsiderably from each other; but it would beimpossible, without devoting too much space tothe subject, to enumerate the differences existingbetween them ; we shall therefore only deal withthe Slovaks, who occupy those parts of the Car-pathians that we are about to visit.
