lerwatering-places and lakes with which we arealready acquainted, we reach Poprád, fromwhence we start by the Kassa-Oderbergline to Kassa (Kaschau), the capital of UpperHungary. CHAPTER X. FROM POPRÁD TO KASSA (kASCHAU). The Kassa-Oderberg route is by no meansless interesting than the Vág route, for the trainruns amidst lovely pine forests. On quittingPoprád you see several charming watering-places along the line. The train is continuallyascending and descending steep hills, andshows you the high Tátra, the Zips townsand forts, and also the tiny villages which areperched on the slopes of the mountains and inthe valleys in the most picturesque and variedform. And as you leave the Zips and_reachthe county of Sáros, everything seems tochange. The scenery becomes less wild andthe people are of a different type. Eperjes is one of the prettiest of thesmall towns in Hungary. It stands amongstlovely gardens, and is overlooked by mountains.The town is quaint in appearance, and thereare several important public buildings, amongstothers the Church of St. Michael, supposed tohave been built in the eleventh century. Thereis a column standing in the centre of the townto point out the spot where Caraffa slaughteredmany Hungarians in the time of Thököli, whoheaded the revolts against Austria.
