The dogs went to see the Mayor andasked his advice, but he only wept and said he could do nothing. He pointedout that even he had been put upon and showed a tear in his glossy coat,made by the father of the owls in a fit of spite. The poor httle dogs were getting very miserable and discouraged, whenone day a change caine. The Mayor was trotting around on the outskirtsof the town, when he heard a terrible hiss, which made him jump three timeshis own height in the air. Out of the grass came the sly and evil rattlesnakeHe asked politely after the health of his friend, the Mayor, and the whole ofthe town besides. The Mayor said he was only fair and asked after thesnakes family.
