Title
IOW-C579C1 Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle with Separtate Folded Plate
Description
English: An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) single loop buckle frame with a separate folded plate (c. 450-c. 600).

The cast buckle frame is 'D'-shaped in plan and 'D'-shaped in cross-section. However, the lower face is slightly convex. It has a narrowed bar which is circular in cross-section. The copper-alloy pin has an integral rectangular plate and measures 8.88mm in length, 11.76mm in width and 2.80mm in thickness. The tapering shaft is square in cross-section and the loop is 'D' shaped in cross-section. The separate sheet copper-alloy plate is composed of two similar elements. Each element consists of a folded widthways strip around the bar with a copper-alloy rivet at each attachment end. A single copper-alloy bar mount secures each strip. One strip is incomplete due to a break.

It is possible that the plate has been replaced or repaired.

This artefact has a green patina with patches of corrosion. The frame has a high tin content or has been tinned on the surface.

Frame: length: 15.72mm; width: 21.65mm; thickness: 7.46mm.
Pin: length: 18.98mm; width of pin: 2.92mm
Complete plate: length: 15.09mm; width: 6.00mm; thickness: 1.04mm.
Overall length: 27.88mm; width: 21.65mm; overall thickness: 9.55mm. Weight: 12.19g.
