Apostles Door of Cathedral, Burgos. BURGOS. 259 rose-window, an internal gallery and pulj)it, anda fine old picture of the Last Supper in thesacristy, are all that remain of its ancient splen-dour. The priest, seeing strangers in the chiu-ch,good-naturedly came forward and invited them tocome into the cloisters, from whence the viewover Burgos is very beautifiil. Descending the hill, they went to see several ofthe old houses in Burgos : among others La Casadel Cordon, the house of the constable, so calledfiom the rope over the portal, and the Casa deMiranda, with its beautifril fluted pillars and patio. But one thing was still unvisited, and thatwas the Carmelite convent, the last of St. Theresasfoundations, and one accomplished in spite ofcontradictions and difficulties of all kinds. It wason the 26th January, and therefore in the depthof winter, with deep snow on the ground, and thefloods out in every direction, that the saint, thoughalready in failing health and strength, undertook
