n the splendid pasture. The largest lake of Africa, the Victoria Nyanza,covers an area of nearly thirty thousand squaremiles, being second in size only to Lake Superior.Its banks are formed of grassy hills, slopingtowards the shore, or of rugged stretches of rocksoon giving place to higher mountain ranges orplateaus. The shore at the north, west and south,along the lake from Uganda to Mwanza, displaysthe character of a hilly country with occasionalweather-worn cliffs; while in the southwest, eastand northeast there are actual ranges of mountainsand extensive plains. A part of Uzukumas country and great stretchesof land farther on by the River Ruvana, in Ugayaand Kavirondo, consist of vast plains and grassyslopes. Elevations of a considerable height arefound in the ranges to the east. The northern,western and southwestern regions are, as a rule,more fertile than the others. The shores them-selves abound in bays, large and small, and at thesouth the Speke, Smith and Emin Pasha gulfs cut

Wherea brook or stream enters the lake there is foundaround its mouth a singular mud swamp, whichin some places shows no considerable difference oflevel between land and water; and it is by nomeans one of the pleasures of life to have to passthrough a fetid swamp of this kind near the lakeamong papyrus stems twenty feet high. To onewho stands on the shores of the lake, and allowshis eyes to range over the broad expanse of bluewater, the Nyanza gives an impression similar tothat of the ocean.
