Title
Incomplete cast copper alloy buckle pin of Early Medieval date, probably sixth century (AD 500 - AD 600).
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy buckle pin of Early Medieval date, probably sixth century (AD 500 - AD 600). The loop is broken and missing. Length 38.6mm, maximum width 15mm and maximum thickness 5mm. Weight 7.98g.

The plate, to which the loop was formerly attached, is sub-rectangular in plan, about 16.5mm x 15mm. It has rounded corners and mid-way along each side (the longer dimension) is a small indentation. On the upper and lower surfaces of the plate is a small deposit of iron corrosion. The plate may be classified as a derivative of the shield-shaped type. The shaft, which tapers slightly towards the tip, is sub-circular in cross-section and has a maximum diameter of 5mm. About 17mm from its junction with the plate, the shaft turns downwards at an angle of about 45° to form a blunt rounded tip. The underside of the tip is not under-cut and there is no sign of wear marks where the tip would have been in contact with the buckle frame. The piece is corroded. However, tiny patches of a mid-green patina survive in places. There is no evidence to suggest that it has been subjected to intense heat.
