rom the car window. A few miles further onwe leave the summit of the Glorieta Mountains, the westerndescent of which is made along the valley of the Galisteo, atributary of the Rio Grande. We are now at the threshold ofthe real southwest, the home of the Cliff Dwellers of the pastand the Pueblo peoples of to-day. As the City of Santa Fe may be regarded as the logicalstarting-point for an excursion to the first group of points ofinterest relating to aboriginal man in the Southwest, we maybreak our journey at Lamy, and take the train for Santa Fe,New Mexicos capital, one of the oldest cities of the UnitedStates. Here Ave shall find several good hotels. As we shall have ample time later on to see this quaint oldtown, we will do nothing more to-night than stroll to the plaza,where, as we listen to the band and watch the faces of thegroups of people, we shall hear a strange tongue, and we mayeasily imagine ourselves transported beyond the confines of theUnited States, into Mexico or Spain.
