Title
Ingot
Description
English: The white metal ingot is of boat-shaped form and triangular cross section. It has been cast in an open mould, showing contraction lines from cooling on top and slight pitting from the mould on the undersides. Both ends are rounded and slightly narrower than the centre (c.7-8mm compared to 12.5mm). The ingot is max.8.2mm thick at the centre (c.5mm either end).

Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated a composition of approximately 38% silver and 42% lead, with approximately 10% copper, 9% tin and 1% zinc.

The metal composition indicates that it was recycled from a mixture of scrap lead, silver and probably brass. Narrow ingots with rounded ends are typical of the later part of the Early Medieval period and, whilst the sharp, triangular section is unusual, a few examples are known from the famous Cuerdale Hoard, deposited around 905-910. The ingot may probably therefore be dated broadly to the Anglo-Scandinavian period of the late 9th-11th centuries.
