Notes | souvenir inkstand marked- A PIECE OF THE RUDDER - OF THE EXPLORING VESSEL - DISCOVERY - CRUSHED WHEN SHE WAS DRIVEN ASHORE IN THE ANTARCTIC - 1901 bottle cap engraved with garter bearing inscription- "DISCOVERY ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1901-4" encircling illustration of penguin Charles Reginald Ford (1880-1972) born in London joined the Royal Navy from school and served on several vessels before volunteering for the Royal Geographical Society Expedition to Antarctic. Following an interview by expedition leader Robert Falcon Scott, Ford was taken on to serve as a steward and assistant to Captain Scott, with the rank of Warrant Officer. He received his Polar medals in 1904, and in December 1906 was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, on the nomination of Sir Clements Markham, KCB. He later returned to New Zealand where he married, and studied architecture. In 1923 he moved to Auckland and formed a partnership with WH Gummer (Gummer and Ford). He was a fellow of the Royal Society, and also became closely involved with the Auckland Museum, being appointed as Honorary Curator of English ceramics. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
