Title
Inlaid Wirral type Roman Brooch
Description
English: Cast copper alloy Wirral type Roman bow brooch dating to the 2nd century AD.

It is mostly complete and is a hinged example. The pin and catchplate are missing. The bow has quite a steep angle when viewed from the side.

There would have been a headloop, just the base of this now remains. The head is stepped, with 3 steps decorated with alternating squares of enamel. The remaining colours are blue and yellow. The upper part of the bow is split into three vertical panels with squares of alternating coloured enamel filling them. Blue and yellow remain but it is likely that there were other colours used. Below these panels at the knee of the brooch is a simple raised circular boss. The lower part of the bow is plain and narrows towards the foot.
