and greenin others. In the female the colour is much paler, and hasa faded look. Below, the basal half of the upper wings is blackish brown, and the rest grey-brown. The lower wings are also grey-brown,and round their edges are seven rather large eye-like spots. Thelower half of each spot is buff, then comes a curved streak ofblack, and the upper edge is white. The insect is a native ofAmboyna. On Plate XII. Pig. 1 is seen an insect which very muchresembles the preceding species, but was shown by Mr. A.Butler to be perfectly distinct. Its name is Papilio Joesa, and 558 INSECTS ABROAD. it is a native of Queensland. The black nuiigins on the uppersurface of the wings are not so deeply toothed, and on the undersurface the eye-like spots are much paler. Another species, Pcqnlio Philijyjms, which was brought by INIr.Wallace from Sumatra, is coloured after a similar fashion, exceptthat the centre of the wings is green instead of blue, and eachspot has upon it a streak of metallic green-blue.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 30(5.—Paiiilio Ulysses.(Black and green.) On the same Plate, at ilg. 2, is drawn a New Guinea Butterfly, called Papilio Euchenor. The figure is considerably reduced, asthe insect itself measures five inches and a half across the out- \ BOLD OUTLINE. 55;) spread wiugs. It is, however, so conspicuous an insect that itcannot be omitted from the present work. It is one of the very few Butterflies that have the upper andunder surfaces of the wing ahnost alike. The aid of colour isnot so much needed in this as in many other insects, because, ifthe reader will imagine that all the light portions of the insectare bright yellow, and the dark portions are jetty black, he canexactly appreciate its real appearance. As has already beenstated, the under surface of the wings is very similar to theupper. The yellow, however, is paler, and occupies more of thewing. There are also some orange spots near the margins ofthe lower wings. The insect which is here represented is a native of NorthernChi
