branches of Mitlanwork. The peculiar feature of these structures which hasattracted most attention is the fretwork decoration ofthe walls. These designs are all purely geometrical,yet are varied and attractive, and are arranged inpanels covering the exterior surface of the buildings,and on interior surfaces are in panels or continuousbands The most remarkable of these are geometricfretwork mosaics made up of sepa-rately hewn or carved stones inthe form of little bricks set inmortar to form ornamental de-signs ; some are angular andcurved grecques (Fig. 90).
