; -•- \\ - . - >>H>.fcz r, IPSWICH AND BUNDANBA. west,-an(;., show out against the green of the paddocks. The pretty suburbs and. small .neat townships of Silkstone, Blackstone, and Booval—here in a cluster,there spreading out-—give the impression of a community to whom want islittle known. Further to the north the Bremer River can be traced as itwinds east to join the Brisbane. At intervals the high outline of a poppetshead indicates where the secret wealth is being sought for. To the north-westthe roofs of Ipswich glitter white in the strong sunlight, whilst on every sidein the far distance rise the purple outlines of the hills. Some of the finest mines around Ipswich are situated on the loop linefrom Bundanba to Redbank. These are Blackheath, Box Flat, Fairbank, Aber-dare, Bogside, Fernie Creek, Bogside No. 2, Mafeking, Denham—these fewlast known as Swanbank—Bonnie Dundee, Rhondda., Whitwood, and NewChum.
Text Appearing After Image:
COALMINEES AT WORK. McQueen and Co.s Box Flat mine is turning out a very good sample ofsteam coal. This mine was the first to adopt the electric coal-cutters, whichcut into the seam automatically, and have proved a great saving in labour.A trial sample of coke was manufactured from the Aberdare seam by McQueenand Co., and forwarded to Mount Morgan, with satisfactory results. Hithertothe best coke has been obtained from North Ipswich. One of the principalmine-owners in the West Moreton is Mr. W. R. Black, whose properties consistof the Blackheath, at Bundanba,; the Abermain, at North Ipswich; and theCaledonian, at Walloon. The Blackheath property consists of 700 acres,between 6 or 7 miles from Ipswich, on the south side of the Bremer. Asnothing more up-to-date exists in the district, it may be cited as an instanceof modern coal-mining in the West Moreton. Three tunnels extend into themountain about 350 yards, cutting a. seam which shows a workable thickness IPSWICH AND BUNDANBA. of 15;
