It is 36.7mm in height, 20.9mm in length and 11.5mm wide. It weighs 23.75g. Photographs of the object were examined by Julia Farley, Belinda Crerer and Ralph Jackson in the Department of Prehistory and Europe, who all feel that it is more likely to be of Roman than Iron Age date. Hare figurines are rare, but are attested in the Roman period, with the hare being a well-accepted symbol of fertility. The closest parallel for the plinth-like base is perhaps the Roman dog figurine from the Mithraeum at Leicester (Green, Religions of civilian Roman Britain, British Archaeological Report 24, 1976, p.166 and Pl.XXI.h). By contrast, small free-standing miniatures of naturalistic animals are very rare in Iron Age Britain and they do not have plinths. The hare is likely to be of first century AD date. |
