Title
Iron Age ear ring (possibly)
Description
English: A copper-alloy object of uncertain date and function. Several similar artefacts, identified as ear rings, have been found in the Champagne region of France and are illustrated in the Morel Collection (I.M. Stead and V. Rigby; 1999; fig. 120). They generally date to the late La Tène I period. However, the french examples differ slightly in that they appear to have been made from thin sheet metal and bent and pressed into shape; this piece is heavy, solid and has been cast in one piece.

The object is crescentic in plan, hollow and has domed surfaces. Where the two tips of the crescent meet, the sides narrow to a sharp point and there is virtually no gap in between. Each side has been decorated with a pair of curves, comprised of a series of punched dots, and a central vertical pair of grooves divided into segments by a series of horizontal short punched lines; this same style of decorative band extends around the perimeter of the object.

The artefact measures 24.4mm wide, 23.1mm high and 10.7mm thick. The weight is 19.09g.
