Title
Iron Age vessel handle
Description
English: An incomplete, 1st Century AD, griffin-headed terminal from a fixed vessel handle. The original vessel would have had a mirror image terminal on the opposite side, joined by an omega-shaped handle. Only the stub of the handle survives on this example and the head of the griffin is also missing.

The front face of the terminal is decorated with punched crecents possibly representing the feathers on the neck of the creature.

The rear face of the terminal is slightly concave in both horizontal and vertical axes to ensure a close fit to the wall of a large vessel. There are traces of silver-coloured solder over much of the rear surface of the object.

A near-identical example can be seen in "Camerton, The late Iron Age and Early Roman Metalwork". Ralph Jackson. p. 46 & pl. 13, no. 124.
