Lengt h s i n In c h e s . lEON TRUSS BRIDGES FOR RAILROADS. 25 HODGKINSONS EXPERIMENTS ON CAST-IRON PILLARS. ^ In order to make estimates of the quantity of iron needed in tlie bridges whicli wepropose to examine, it is necessary to adopt some formulas for tlie strength of cast andof wrought iron. As the latter is only used for tension in the bridges which we haveselected, and as its strength to resist tension is universally acknowledged to vary as itsminimum cross-section, the formula for wrought-iron becomes simple enough. Withcast-iron it is different. After much theoretical investigation, Mr. Baton Hodgkinson determined to ascertainfrom experiment the actual breaking weight of pillars and beams of cast-iron, varyingthe conditions so as to determine the law of the strength, if possible.
