in getting from Sonmiani to thecapital of Mahmud Khan, then chief of Kalat: that is to say,they performed the journey in fifteen marches, and haltedseven days, reckoning the distance at a fraction above 345miles. Outram chose the western route, by Nal; made out hisjourney in less than eight days, and reckoned the distance 355 miles—a figure somewhat higher than that of his predecessor.His movements were necessarily secret and rapid, too much sofor accurate survey or observation: for he was travelling at atime of great local excitement, through an enemys country andamid a rough and rude people. Starting at midnight, disguisedas an Afghan, with one private servant only, he left camp underthe guardianship of two Saiyids of Shal, who had acceptedthe responsibility of escorting him, and whose two armedattendants made up the whole party. There were thus sixpersons in all—mounted on four ponies and two camels, The Itinerary attached to his Diary has become a valuable reference. Plate 5.
