On the other hand, it hassuffered to an extreme degree, and under the intluence of its nearest neighbours, allthe fatal consequences of the doctrine of the master himself, and especially themonstrous vagaries of his disciples. M. Martin Arzelier remarks in his ChretienEvangelique (No. 10, eleventh year), that it would be au unprofitable task to undertaketo trace the pure and abstract doctrine of the founder of the Good Tao in JapaneseBuddhism. The Proteus of Greek fable, he adds, is not less intangible than the GoodTao in its metamorphoses among the various peoples of Asia and the Far East. Every sort of modification and addition is justified beforehand by the followingadage, which seems to have been the watchword of the missionaries of Buddhism: Everything that agrees with good sense and circumstances agrees with truth, andought to serve as a rule.
