ALFRED SENSIER, whose posthumous book is here pubHshed,was a man who interested himself in historical things, wholoved, almost with passion, pictures, drawings, and engravings, andwho defended with the most indefatigable devotion some of thegreatest artists of this century. He fought for them and by theirside. In future years the name of Sensier will be always associatedwith the names of Theodore Rousseau, Diaz, and Millet. Born in Paris on the 25th of December, 1815, the son of alawyer who delighted in books, Alfred Sensier heard, from child-hood, the gossip of Vignette editions as well as the severerdiscussions of the law. Although he spent some of his youthfulyears in a lawyers office, Sensier was always fond of pictures.While pursuing his law course, he watched with a passionateattention the great battles of modern arjeanfranoismil00sens
