English: WW1 leather jerkin that belonged to 17735 Rifleman William Mandeno Smallfield, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade; sent to him in 1916 as a gift from his grandmother. brown leather; no collar; front opening with 10 brass eyelets either side for fastening; machine stitched; one large breast pocket sewn onto left facing; reinforced at armpit markings- owner's details marked in ink inside back- No. 17735. - Rifleman W.M. Smallfield - "B" Coy, 5th Platoon, - 1st Battalion. - 3rd N.Z. (R). B.

Notes This is a leather jerkin that belonged to 17735 Rifleman William Mandeno Smallfield, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade. It was sent to him in 1916 as a gift from his grandmother. 17735 Rifleman William M Smallfield (3rd Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade) joined the NZRB in 1916 aged 21. He left NZ for the UK with G Coy, 16th Reinforcements, on board SS Mokoia. After a period at Sling Camp he made his way to the Western Front where he was wounded in In February 1917, spending some days in hospital before returning to the battlefield. After two and a half years on the Western Front he finally returned to his family in Auckland.
