Title
jester figurine (back)
Description
English: Incomplete cast lead alloy toy figurine of a jester with a pointed hat, collar and tunic, with pantaloons and tights below. The figure is missing parts of his lower legs and feet and has a hollow back which may have slotted on to a larger model or frieze. His legs come our at a forty-five degree angle as if he is sitting down, or propped up against a wall, and he has bent arms with his hands are on his hips suggesting consternation. The style of the clothing for the jester can be seen in paintings and figures dating from the 18th to the 19th century, when the costumes became more ornate than their Medieval equivalents, but it is more likely from the size and type of toy figurine, that it was produced during the 19th century.

See NCL-EE1C37 for a very similar figurine that is more complete with one foot and more of the hat remaining. Here the stance suggests that the figure may have been mounted on a horse, connected by a projection at the back around the waistline.
