Title
Jet Bead from Roxby cum Risby
Description
English: Jet

Bead. Turned spherical bead with flat ends and a drilled aperture of diameter 3mm. This may be a rosary bead and, if the material is correctly identified, is likely to be of Whitby jet - though jet was also used to make pilgrim souvenirs at Santiago de Compostella, northern Spain. Devotion to the rosary developed through the later Middle Ages, and its dissemination was especially associated with the Dominican friars, who had established several houses in northern England by 1250. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1500.

Diameter: 10.4mm, Height: 8.0mm, Weight: 0.58gms.
