Charles Byrd of Westover, Virginia, wrote to Governor Spotswood introducing Charles Bridges as aman of good family either by the frowns of misfortune or his ownmismanagement obliged to seek his bread in a strange land, addingHis name is Bridges and his profession painting and if you have anyemployment for him in that way he will be proud of obeying yourcommand. He has drawn my children and several others in thisneighborhood, and tho he has not the master hand of a Lilly orKneller, yet had he lived so long ago as when places were given to themost deserving, he might have pretended to be Sergeant Painter ofVirginia. Bridges was painting in Virginia for years, and a largenumber of portraits by him have been preserved.
