rents had been to Red Kill, eight miles over the moun-tain, to visit Uncle Martin, and were late in returning, andthat doorway was as dark as Podunk, as the lads fatherused to say, the goblins certainly seemed hovering justbeyond that opening. Huddled in the furthest corner ofthe dimly-lighted kitchen sat little John with his brothersand sisters, all of them watching uneasily that blacknessof darkness. What fearsome creatures lurk there? How long willthey stay hidden? What hideous shapes will they takewhen they loom up in that doorway? Will Mother nevercome? How the wind howls! How the shutters rattle!And that black doorway on which their gaze is riveted! But, Joy! the sound of wheels! Theyve come! Theyve come! Fathers voice is heard shouting for the lantern. Thehuddled group scatters. Glad cries and skurrying feet greetMothers return to her frightened bairns. As she comeshurrying in at the door, Fear flies out at the window, andin the bustle and talk the lurking spectres vanish, too.
