Her dark gown, almost black, iscrossed at the square neck-opening by a gold-colored band.Her wavy, yellow-blond hair falls over her shoulders, below agray-white mantle, and she wears a fur-trimmed red cloakenfolding her shoulders and draped across her lap, where, ona blue-white scarf, she holds the nude, reclining Child, whofaces forward and toward the left, clasping a fruit in oneraised hand. Below Him, at the Mothers knee, on a tablewith an olive-yellow coverlet is a dish of fruit and an illumi-nated devotional volume. Joseph appears as at a window, agreen and hilly landscape behind him, standing and lookingdown at the Child, his fingers making the sign of blessing. He is nude, save fora pale blue drapery, and the fingers of His upraised hand areheld in the attitude of blessing above His head. The Virgin isin rich robes of blue-green and red, with fur and lace anda brilliant jeweled brooch or clasp, and is painted with aminute and affectionate delicacy. Her flowing hair of blondecendrcc tint, escaping from its fine lace covering, is brilliantwith golden lights wliich are repeated in the short-cropped andcurly hair of the Child.
