Description |
English: Joseph F. Green Print inscribed 'Yours truly Jos. F Green'. It is a portrait of Green by an unnamed lithographer possibly working from a photograph, and with Green's signature added. Joseph Fletcher Green was the second son of Frederick Green (1814-76) of the Blackwall shipbuilding family and his wife Elizabeth (nee Fletcher) of Stepney (1813-70). He was born on 29 April 1846, played rugby for England in 1871, married Ellen, daughter of the engineer John Penn junior of Blackheath on 1 August 1877 and died 28 August 1923, without issue. His elder brother was (Sir) Frederick Green and while exact details of the careers of both have not yet been checked it is presumed that both were involved in F. Green & Co., the passenger and cargo-managing arm of the Green family enterprise, later subsumed in the Orient Steam Navigation Co. There are copies of the wills, or parts thereof, of their father Frederick Green and of J. F. Green in NMM MS GRN23 and a 'Spy' caricature of the latter in GRN 25. |
